Like many Christian names, popularity of the name ‘Arthur’ for newborn boys has fluctuated over time. In 2024, Arthur was in the top ten most common names to be bestowed upon children in England and Wales, while in Ireland the name was much less common but still managed to make the top 100 list. This is perhaps unsurprising given the royal connotations of the name deriving from the legend of King Arthur, meaning that it became more popular in Britain. However, it does appear to have had Celtic origins from the bear goddess named Artio.
