The Met Office has warned that the icy conditions are expected to persist with a yellow weather warning still in place for Northern Ireland.

Temperatures were expected to drop significantly last night to -4C with some parts of the country due to see snowfall through the night.

The freezing temperatures are expected to remain tonight with the east of the country seeing lows of -2C.

A few scattered showers will be seen towards the east and the north as well with the possibility of wintery showers seen at higher altitudes.

However, Friday will be mostly dry and bright with maximum temperatures reaching 4C.

Saturday will also remain bright and dry for much of the day with the chance of rain, sleet and snow to the north later in the day.

The showers are expected to begin by the evening and will continue into Sunday. Maximum temperatures for Saturday will be 3C.

Frozen trough

The Met Office forecast icy conditions to return in the early hours of Sunday with temperatures predicted to drop to a maximum of -4C.

Rain and sleet will be seen to the east and north with the potential of strong northerly winds with gusts of up to 38mph.

In light of the below-zero conditions, NI Water has issued a warning to the public on pipe safety.

A spokesperson for NI Water said: “The freezing cold temperatures bring the risk of freeze-thaw damage to water pipes, with unoccupied homes, public buildings and businesses particularly at risk when temperatures suddenly rise after below-freezing conditions.

“NI Water is reminding the public that now is the prime time to wrap up your water pipes while you are wrapping up yourself.”

For those residing in Great Britain, people who intend to travel despite the current wintry weather have been warned by both the Met Office and National Rail to plan ahead if on the move.

A yellow warning is in place from noon on Saturday until 9am on Monday and covers all regions of England other than the South West, the majority of Wales and parts of southern Scotland.

In the Republic of Ireland, a weather warning has also been issued by Met Eireann saying conditions could bring hazardous travelling and animal welfare issues.

The forecaster said this weekend will be very cold, with “very disruptive and impactful” weather likely in the days ahead, with the possibility of heavy rain, sleet and snow.
