It’s been a week since we said goodbye to Gavin & Stacey for the last time. The final episode was incredibly popular with fans, racking in over 12 million TV viewers on Christmas Day.
While the question surrounding Nessa’s proposal to Smithy was answered with a happy ending, one ongoing storyline never got resolved. Despite the mention of Bryn and Jason’s infamous fishing trip, the truth of what actually happened never got revealed in the finale.
However, that wasn’t the end of it. For those truly loyal fans who tuned into the retrospective documentary ‘Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell’, a teaser about the fishing trip was shown right at the end.
The hour-long documentary which aired on New Year’s Day, showed some footage designed to look like an old camcorder video.
The footage shows a young Jason sat on a grassy bank by a river holding a fishing rod, whilst in the background Bryn says “Ah, who do we have here?”, as Jason waves at the camera.
Another shot sees Jason holding a large fish that he’s caught, with Bryn saying, “Oh, look at that! Hold it up Jase, hold it up!”
Jason then cooks the fish on a stove whilst Bryn asks him if he enjoyed his soup. The footage then cuts, keeping the mystery intact.
At a press screening for the finale, Robert Wilfort, who plays Jason said, “I’d like to say now and forever: the joke has always been you don’t find out what happens on the fishing trip!
“I’m sorry, everybody, but that has always been the joke, and it always will be because it’s funny. It’s funnier that way. And I was so pleased that we didn’t reveal it, because we’ve never known what it is.”
