Wayne Rooney has been sacked by Plymouth after a nightmare season so far, it has been confirmed.

The former Manchester United star, 39, and the Championship club are parting ways on a mutual basis after a dire campaign that sees them sitting bottom of the Championship table.

The news comes just two days after Plymouth’s 2-0 defeat to Oxford United.

Rooney, who took charge at the start of the season, has overseen a difficult period for the Pilgrims, who currently sit bottom of the Championship table.

The club has failed to secure a victory since their 1-0 win over Portsmouth on November 5.

Plymouth have endured a nine-game winless streak, including heavy 4-0 defeats to both Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol City.

The Pilgrims have managed to collect just 18 points from 23 matches this season.

They currently sit four points away from safety in the Championship in 24th position.

The club’s away form has been particularly concerning, with only two points secured on their travels this season.

Following Sunday’s defeat to Oxford United, Rooney expressed his frustration to BBC Radio Devon.

“We didn’t create enough chances and didn’t do enough to stop them scoring their goals,” he said.

He added: “With the first one, it comes from a cross and it’s disappointing because we’ve been putting in work to stop crosses and get tighter to the man to stop it.”

“The second goal comes from when they break out, we didn’t do well enough one-on-one defensively and it has cost us,” Rooney explained.

“I expected a bit more today and we didn’t get it but that’s football, and unfortunately we come away with the defeat.”

The news comes amid Rooney’s recent clarification regarding a viral video that showed him at his Plymouth apartment.

The former England captain took to Instagram to address speculation about footage showing him with an unidentified woman.

Rooney explained that the video, from last summer, showed a couple who had given him a lift home, with his son present at the time.

“It is annoying that at least one online newspaper has chosen to edit the footage to make it appear has though a woman entered the apartment on her own,” he wrote on Instagram.

“That is simply not true,” he added.
