A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for a hero father who perished while unsuccessfully trying to save his daughter after she plunged through ice into frigid water in northern Ontario.
The OPP reported Sunday that officers were investigating the disappearance of Christian Bergeron and his daughter, Maya, a Grade 6 student, near Pete’s Dam Park, about an hour south of Kirkland Lake.
Social media has said Christian and Maya went through the ice at Pete’s Dam. As of Tuesday afternoon, their bodies had not been recovered.
“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we write this. On Dec. 29th, our dear friend Christian, a devoted father, fiance, and loving soul, tragically lost his life while trying to save his daughter, Maya,” the GoFundMe said.
“In an act of incredible love and courage, Christian attempted to rescue Maya from a dangerous situation at Pete’s Dam, a place that was close to their hearts.”

Both were taken away by the current, resulting in an “indescribable loss” for their family, the page said.
Maya has been described as a loving child with the gift of laughter and curiosity.
“Maya’s lighthearted nature and joyful presence brought so much happiness to everyone she met. Her twin sister, Ava, will forever hold their special connection close to her heart,” the page said.
Christian is described as being a devoted father to his sons, Matthew and Philip, his stepson, Liam, and to his twin daughters, Maya and Ava. He was also the fiance to his partner, Miranda Mariott.
“Christian’s smile could light up any room, and his sense of humour, kindness, and generosity made him someone everyone could count on. He was always there for his family, his friends, and his coworkers, willing to lend a hand at any moment,” the page said.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the GoFundMe had raised $18,415of its $30,000 goal — money meant to help the family deal with costs following their loss.
“We hope to raise funds to help alleviate some of these burdens, so his family and children can focus on healing and supporting one another.”
