Gardai investigating the death of a woman in Co Roscommon have launched a murder inquiry.

It comes after a house near Athlone was searched and two cars seized for examination by gardai investigating the death of the woman who was found in a field.

Gardai said they have launched a murder investigation after the woman’s body was discovered on land at Curraghaleen, near Athlone, on Monday.

She has been named as Mirjana Pap, who was in her 50s.

A post-mortem examination was carried out earlier today by the deputy state pathologist, Dr Yvonne McCarthy, at Galway University Hospital. The results are not being released for operational purposes, gardai said.

Gardai have appealed to the public for information and say they are particularly interested in the movements of a silver Peugeot 207 registered 08G on Saturday between 11am and 12pm.

They said the car is understood to have travelled from Beechville estate, Athlone, onto the N6 motorway – westbound – from junction 11 to junction 13 before continuing on the R362 from Monksland to Bealnaulla.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the inquiry and an incident room has been set up at Athlone garda station.

A family liaison officer has also been assigned to provide support.

Gardai said examinations are under way at the scene and at a residential property in Athlone by the Garda Technical Bureau, and two cars have been seized for examination.
