Year four pupils from May Park Primary School have rolled up their sleeves to get into Bristol Waste’s Autumn Litter Blitz.

The blitz is an annual city-wide litter picking campaign aiming to unite Bristol’s communities in the goal of cleaning up their streets.

Visiting the streets surrounding their school in Eastville, the children collected 21 bags of litter and brought a real sparkle back to the area.

One year four described the afternoon litter pick as ‘one of the best days of my life’.

The litter pick was organised by the school in partnership with the Big Tidy, a project by Bristol Waste and Bristol City Council to improve Bristol’s street cleanliness and help residents feel proud to live in their community.

Teaching assistant Bethany Johnson said: “The children really enjoyed the litter pick and learning more about why putting your litter in the bin is important to protect nature and wildlife. It’s essential that we teach children about these issues from a young age, so they grow up with a connection to their environment and a sense of pride and responsibility for how their neighbourhood looks.”

May Park School is also now registered with the Big Tidy’s Little Big Tidiers scheme, which encourages environmentally-minded children to give litter picking a go. Once the school completes six litter picks, they receive their own mini litter picking kit complete with Little Big Tidier hi-vis vests to keep and continue to clean up their community.

Parents and schools can sign up for the Little Big Tidiers scheme on the Bristol Waste website at bristolwastecompany.co.uk/little-big-tidier.
