As many people across the UK are experiencing flu, norovirus, RSV, and covid cases, some others are also nursing self-inflicted hangover symptoms after indulging during the festive season. Amid plenty of illness, an expert has weighed in about painkillers, settling the question of which is best for alleviating symptoms.
Abbas Kanani, superintendent pharmacist at Chemist Click, has shed light on the benefits of paracetamol and ibuprofen, dispelling common misconceptions. Mr Kanani revealed that a combination of both can also provide a “double whammy” effect for those suffering.
He explained: “Paracetamol is probably more effective at bringing down temperature, so it’s almost like a double-whammy, you get rid of your headache and bring your temperature down. But if you feel that you have more body aches, that’s your main symptom, then ibuprofen is probably slightly better as it’s an anti-inflammatory.”
The expert warned that people should be mindful when taking ibuprofen as many are allergic to the class of drug that it belongs to. However, he pointed out that many are unaware that taking both medicines together can be an effective way to combat severe symptoms.
Mr Kanani added: “If you feel that one isn’t enough you can take ibuprofen as well as paracetamol, you can take them together. A lot of people don’t know that it’s not one or the other, you can put them together as they work in different ways.”
While these medications can alleviate aches, fever, and mild cold and flu symptoms, Mr Kanani notes that coughs and nasal congestion won’t be much relieved by these alone. Home remedies or over-the-counter options can address such symptoms.
Always consult the packaging and informational leaflet before combining cold and flu treatments to know what can be safely taken together. While paracetamol and ibuprofen can be used concurrently, they may not be compatible with other substances.
