A number of films and TV series have been filmed in Bristol over recent years, and in particular in recent months, some major A-listers have been spotted. The variety of different spaces available to producers of shows, as well as the renowned Bottle Yard Studios, means that plenty of action can be seen across the city.
Whilst some filming is wrapped up in a short space of time, others can take several months across various locations. When filming does happen in Bristol, usually there is fanfare and a desperate need to know what is happening, and more importantly who is in it.
Across Bristol within the last year, many hours of filming took place for many different series and productions as Bristol has always been known for many series and films, so what has been filmed in recent times? Here is a round-up of all the filming that took place in Bristol in 2024.
The Road Trip
In January, X account Bristol_filmingposted that location signs were spotted in Clifton which were linked to Moonage Pictures, but that it was for The Road Trip , a six-part drama for Paramount+.
It was believed that Emma Appleton was spotted on site after an “actress with dark bobbed hair” was glimpsed. The Everything I Know About Love star leads the cast which includes Laurie Davidson and David Jonsson and it was aired on Christmas Day.
Winter of the Crow
Winter of the Crow is an upcoming film which stars Lesley Manville and Tom Burke, which was also filmed in January. The film is set in 1981 during the Cold War and was filmed outside Bristol Central Library.
The Crow Girl
In February, The Crow Girl started filming across Bristol in locations such as Castle Park and Wine Street. The TV series, adapted from the Crow Girl book series, stars Katherine Kelly, Dougray Scott and Eve Myles in lead roles for the Paramount+ series.
The series continued to film in Bristol in March and April as the filming was funded by rock star Slash. Filming would eventually wrap up in May.
Dope Girls
The BBC drama Dope Girls was confirmed to have filmed in Bristol in February, having previously left Bristolians baffled at the unknown filming. The series was spotted filming at Berkeley Square in Clifton using the code BL
Bad Apples
Bad Apples was filmed at the Bottle Yard Studios and at locations including Coombe Dingle in March. The thriller stars Saoirse Ronan, a four-time Oscar nominee, as a teacher who makes a series of bad decisions leading to her taking a ten-year-old chaotic student and locking the child in her home.
Am I Being Unreasonable? (series two)
An unconfirmed production was filmed in St Pauls at the Lakota nightclub in May. This is believed to have been for the second series of Am I Being Unreasonable?, a comedy series starring Daisy May Cooper.
The Forsyte Saga
Beginning in May 2024, The Forsyte Saga continued to film in Bristol into July. The six-part adaptation, of the novels by John Galsworthy, stars the likes of Eleanor Tomlinson, Jack Davenport, Millie Gibson and Stephen Moyer.
The series was filmed at the Christmas Steps where various stars were spotted. Francesca Annis, alongside Tomlinson and Davenport, were seen by excited fans. The series will be available on PBS.
Towards Zero
An Agatha Christie novel adaptation, Towards Zero is a three-part series which was filmed in June around Clifton. The series stars Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Ella Lily Hyland in starring roles.
A selection of 1930s cars were spotted for the period drama, which will be shown on BBC One. Additional filming took place across Devon.
Down Cemetery Road
Down Cemetery Road had been filming in Bristol since the very beginning of July in a large production spanning several months. The series, for Apple TV+, stars Emma Thompson (who also is an executive producer) and Ruth Wilson in the lead roles.
It is being produced by 60Forty Films and has been filmed in places such as St Nicholas Market, Corn Street, City Hall and at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery. It is expected to be released in 2025.
The Seven Dials Mystery
Netflix series The Seven Dials Mystery , an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel, was filmed in June and July in Bristol. The series cast contains an all-star cast including Mia McKenna-Bruce, Helena Bonham Carter and Martin Freeman.
Orchid Pictures was filming a driving scene in the 1920s series on Bridewell Street where Mr Freeman was spotted. He drove a 1920s style vehicle a number of times, increasing the speed of the car with each take. The release date for the series is unknown.
Boarders (series two)
The second series of Boarders was also being filmed in July. The first series, which follows five talented Black teenagers who are offered sixth form scholarships to what is described as a Harry Potter-type world, aired on BBC Three and iPlayer earlier this year.
Studio Lambert filmed part of the second series at Clifton College, where filming lasted at least a month. There will be six episodes, lasting 45 minutes each, and the premiere date is expected to be in late 2024 or 2025.
Mother’s Pride
Mother’s Pride is a comedy drama film which was filmed near the Bristol Aquarium in August. It is described as “a comedy drama about a failing pub, a divided community and a grieving family whose lives are changed by brewing real ale and entering the Great British Beer Awards,” according to IMDb.
Stars including Martin Clunes and James Buckley were spotted on the set of the shoot. The Bristol Aquarium became The Great British Beer Festival throughout the duration of the film shoot.
Young Sherlock
Amazon Prime TV series YoungSherlock was filmed across the city centre in September. The eight-part series, based on the Young Sherlock Holmes series of books by Adam Lane, stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Colin Firth and Dónal Finn.
Mr Finn was spotted filming outside the Corn Exchange, whilst other filming took place at Queen Square and St Nicholas Market. The series, directed by Guy Ritchie, is set to be released in 2025.
The Famous Five (series two)
The second series of The Famous Five was filmed at The Bottle Yard Studios, which will be produced for the BBC in co-production with The Mediapro Studio. Consisting of two episodes of 90 minutes each, the series stars Diaana Babnicova, Elliott Rose, Kit Rakusen and Flora Jacoby Richardson alongside Kip the bearded collie cross.
The Famous Five follows the young explorers during wartime and shows the hazards of growing up. The first series premiered on CBBC and was popular amongst children.
The Undeclared War (series two)
The Undeclared War also filmed in Bristol at the end of September. Playground Entertainment filmed the second series at sites including Brandon Hill and City Hall.
The Channel 4 series stars Hannah Khalique-Brown, Simon Pegg, Mark Rylance, Alex Jennings and Maisie Richardson-Sellers. The cybersecurity-themed series was created by seven-time BAFTA winner Peter Kosminsky.
The War Between the Land and the Sea
A spin off to the Doctor Who series, The War Between the Land and the Sea was filmed at the Harbourside and in Clifton from October onwards. The series will consist of five episodes and is expected to be released in 2025.
The series stars Russell Tovey, who was spotted at the Harbourside, as well as Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Jemma Redgrave.
H is for Hawk
In November, H is for Hawk was filmed in Clifton at Goldney Hall. The film, set to be released next year, is based off the book of the same name written by Helen MacDonald.
The film is being adapted by Emma Donoghue and stars Claire Foy and Brendan Gleeson. Filming for the new movie also took place in Clevedon.
Inheritance
In December, a new five-part series was being filmed at Queen Square. Inheritance is a thriller that stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jonny Lee Miller, Sheldon Shephard and Bel Powley in starring roles.
Based in Bristol and in Jamaica, the series follows a young bi-racial lawyer as she challenges an inheritance claim filed by an unknown resident in Jamaica. Filming took place within a property.
