Thinning hair is a problem for many men and women, particularly over the age of 50.
Speaking exclusively to GB News, a celebrity stylist said two habits in the shower could be causing your hair to thin out.
Over-shampooing and failing to use conditioner properly are among the main culprits leading to thinning locks, according to the stylist and creative education director for Scruples Haircare William Whatley.
These routine mistakes can significantly impact hair health, but the expert suggested there are straightforward solutions to protect and maintain healthy hair.
Shampoo can cause thinning of the hair

Addressing the first major mistake, William explained that over-washing can be particularly damaging for those with thinning hair.
“Over shampooing for thinning hair, especially with women over 50. Over shampooing can cause the hair to thin more as you age as the hair follicle becomes smaller and weaker and can fall out easier,” he said.
The solution, according to the expert, is simple but effective: “I recommend no more than two to three times a week shampooing for thinning hair for women.”
This reduced washing schedule helps protect vulnerable hair follicles from unnecessary stress and damage.
The second crucial mistake, according to the hair stylist, is overlooking the importance of conditioner in hair care routines.
“Don’t forget to use a conditioner, which is a very important component after shampooing. It will help strengthen the hair, and add essential oils and proteins to your hair that your body and scalp are not providing,” he advised.
The expert emphasised that conditioner plays a vital role in maintaining hair health, particularly for those experiencing thinning.
This step is especially crucial as it helps replenish nutrients that may be lacking naturally in the hair and scalp. For optimal results, William stressed the importance of selecting the right hair care products.

He said: “Ask your professional stylist which shampoo and conditioner would be perfect for your hair, especially thinning hair. There are many brands for thinning and fine hair.”
The expert suggested specific qualities to look for in hair products, adding: “You want to make sure that it is also weightless and doesn’t have any paraffins in it that’s going to cause a buildup and clog any hair follicles.”
Professional guidance in product selection can make a significant difference in managing thinning hair effectively.
