The NHS has coined the term ‘quad-demic’ to describe the simultaneous spread of Covid-19, flu, RSV, and norovirus across the country as Brits battle a surge of winter viruses. According to the UK Health Security Agency’s latest reports, confirmed Covid cases for the week ending December 11 reached 1,069 – although this represents a slight decrease of 1.6 percent from the previous week.
Deaths and hospital admissions due to Covid have also increased.
The other viruses in the quad-demic are hitting the rest of the UK in full effect as well, with the number of flu patients in hospital beds higher than any recent winter nationally.
One primary piece of advice ahead of the festive period from the NHS is: “Supposed to be going to a Christmas, Boxing Day, or New Year party but feeling unwell? Take one for the team and stay at home so that everyone else doesn’t get ill.”
Moreover, keeping hydrated is essential, even if the temptation is to reach for warmer or more festive drinks. The health service highlights the importance of drinking water, recommending at least one glass with and between each meal, helping individuals stay hydrated, ward off illnesses, and maintain robust health, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Lastly, the NHS advises that loving brussels sprouts could contribute greatly to staying healthy during this challenging season.
The festive season is a time of indulgence, but it’s crucial not to neglect your fruit and veg intake. These nutritional powerhouses help sustain your energy, bolster your immune system against nasty bugs, and keep you feeling tip-top – so don’t skimp on those sprouts, advises the health service.
Staying active over the Christmas period is an excellent mood booster, stress manager, and energy level maintainer. Whether you’re throwing a living room boogie or taking a brisk winter walk – staying in motion is fantastic for fitness and mental wellbeing.
