Larry Lamb reprised his role as Mick Shipman for the final time in scenes that aired in Christmas Day’s Gavin and Stacey finale, and has since issued a touching statement.

The BBC show concluded its 17-year story with one final visit to the Wests and the Shipmans as fans tuned in for answers to their lingering questions about the comedy favourite.

The show left fans hanging five years ago in the 2019 Christmas special, with Nessa Jenkins (Ruth Jones) having proposed to Smithy (James Corden).

Viewers soon discovered Smithy had rejected Nessa, with the two avoiding each other while sharing custody of their now-teenage son.

While the final episode included plenty of emotional scenes, one featuring Lamb’s character Mick Shipman and Smithy demonstrating their close bond left fans “sobbing,” which they made clear as Lamb issued a brief statement once the episode had aired.

Taking to X, the actor, 77, penned: “Thanks so much for all your lovely words… so proud to be part of such a wonderful show!!” (sic)

In the comments section, viewers thanked Lamb for bringing the beloved role to life and touched on the stand-out moment which saw Smithy seeking assurance from Mick.

As Smithy stood preparing to take his vows with new bride Sonia, Gavin (Mathew Horne) finally confessed to his best friend that he didn’t think he should go through with the marriage.

Eventually, the other guests admitted to their doubts, standing up when asked if they agreed with Gavin. However, not wanting to add to the drama, Mick remained seated.

As Sonia pressed for the vows to continue, Smithy demonstrated how much Mick’s guidance meant to him as he paused and turned to his best friend’s dad, awaiting his opinion.

“The joy I felt when Mick stood up in the end. Phenomenal ending to a beautiful show,” one replied.

A second wrote: “Larry. You’re an absolute legend mate. When smithy waited for your approval, it got me more than any other scene did. Sad to see it’s ended but thankful to see all of the episodes from day 1.”

“You’re a legend, Larry! Your contribution to the show has been incredible. Here’s to many more wonderful projects!” a third added.

“That moment when Smithy clocked eyes with Mick and he stood up…..absolute class. The episode was all about the relationships between the characters and also the relationships we all have with the show. It was pure perfection!” one more glowing review read.
