While you’re cosying up and watching your favourite festive films this Christmas period, it’s fair to say you’re going to spot a significant amount of jewellery worn by the likes of Kate McCallister in Home Alone, Martha May in The Grinch and, well, NOT Emma Thompson’s character in Love Actually.

It’s just one of the Christmas movie moments that gets to many of us – here’s a more Bristol-focused one about The Holiday in case you missed it – but when Alan Rickman’s Harry in the film decides to buy a gold heart necklace for another woman and not his wife Karen (played by Emma Thompson) we’re all left wondering what on earth he’s playing at.

And that’s before we even get to the price of the necklace, which some online have described as ‘one of the ugliest pieces of jewellery’ they have ever seen. As Rowan Atkinson’s shop worker character tells Harry in the film, the necklace is priced at £270 – and it got us wondering what it would be worth today.

Well, thanks to a new study by experts at Diamonds Factory, now we know. The study has revealed the prices of some of the most iconic jewellery pieces featured in classic Christmas films. By valuing items featured in these movies, the jewellery experts have even discovered that one in particular would now boast a six-figure price tag.

Ella Citron-Thompkins, jewellery expert at Diamonds Factory, ranks and reveals the most expensive jewellery from some festive favourites:

Martha May Whovier’s Engagement Ring – The Grinch

Valued at £117,720

“This three-tiered diamond ring is incredibly extravagant. With diamonds stacked high on a gold band, it ranks in first place for the priciest on-screen jewellery with a six-figure cost of £117,720.”

Dorey Walker’s Engagement Ring – Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

Valued at £49,392

“In second place was Dorey Walker’s engagement ring from Miracle on 34th Street. This ring is high value, firstly because it’s Cartier. Secondly, because it has a perfectly sleek platinum band with a large square-cut diamond. We’ve valued this luxury piece in the five-figure range of £49,392.”

The Golden Heart Necklace – Love Actually

Valued at £4,484

“In third place, ranks Alan Rickman’s gift of the infamous golden heart necklace. Though originally priced at £270 in the movie, we have predicted a 1,560% increase in value since its debut in 2003. It now boasts a valuation of £4,484. This is the perfect example of how jewellery can really appreciate in value, making it not only a sentimental gift but an investment, too.”

Amanda Woods’ pendant – The Holiday

Valued at £2,545

“Amanda Woods’ glass pendulum-style pendant came in fourth place, costing over £2,500. This necklace is filled with darker diamonds which move within the charm as it swings from a thin, dainty gold chain.

Kate McCallister’s Golden Earrings – Home Alone 2

Valued at £1,073

“The statement gold earrings seen in the “Kevin!” scene from Home Alone 2 came in fifth place for value. These gold, dangling statement earrings which feature a hoop lowered from an oval, elongated stud have been priced at £1,073.”

Jovie’s Pearl Ring – Elf

Valued at £712

“The most affordable item on our list was Jovie’s minimalist baroque-style pearl ring, which takes the final place on our ranks. At £712, this more reasonably priced piece still brings a touch of festive magic.”
