We already know what the federal Liberal attack line will be in the next election, once they finally figure out who their leader is.
Whether it’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau or someone else, it will be that they are afraid of what Canada will become if Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre wins the next election.
It’s the oldest Liberal attack line in the book — expect to hear plenty about the Conservatives’ “hidden agenda”— as it helped them eke out minority governments in the 2019 and 2021 elections.
But the Liberals’ problem is that far more Canadians are worried about what Canada will look like after four more years of Liberal government by a political party that cares more about redistributing income than growing the economy, as evidenced by its enthusiastic plunge into massive public debt.
A party led by a leader who, early in his mandate, shockingly described Canada as the world’s first “post-national state” with “no core identity” and no “mainstream.”
Despite this, Trudeau said, Canadians would continue to share common “values” such as “openness, respect, compassion, willingness to work hard, to be there for each other, to search for equality and justice” as if these would magically develop on their own.
That led the Liberals to massively hike immigration to Canada, despite warnings against this policy from its own public servants, obtained by The Canadian Press through an access to information request.
“In Canada, population growth has exceeded the growth in available housing units,” these documents warned.
“Policy-makers must understand the misalignment between population growth and housing supply, and how permanent and temporary immigration shapes population growth … Rapid increases put pressure on healthcare and affordable housing.”
The Trudeau government — too late — has belatedly acknowledged it made a mistake and has begun to dial back future immigration, but the economic damage this has already caused continues to contribute to the two major issues confronting Canadians today — the high cost of living and lack of affordable housing.
While the Liberals are about to warn us — once again — about the Conservatives’ “hidden agenda” what is far more concerning is a Liberal government that publicly boasted about its high immigration policies while knowing it was ignoring advice from its own experts about the economic damage they would cause.
