Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after gunfire rang out early Thursday in Whitby.

Durham Regional Police said officers responded at approximately 1:15 a.m. to the area of Haverhill Cres. and Harrongate Pl. for an armed person.

When cops arrived at the scene, multiple shell casings were found in the area. From the shell casings, officers determined at least two firearms were used.

Bullet holes were also located at two homes, police said. Residents were home at the time of the shooting but no physical injuries were reported.

Investigators released a short audio recording of the shooting in which two sets of gunfire can be heard.

Authorities are appealing for any witnesses or anyone who may have video footage, including home surveillance or dashcam, to contact police.
