We are in the final stages of preparing for Christmas and soon the rush of people buying last minute Christmas presents, decorations or festive treats will be upon us. There is plenty to think about over the festive period but one thing which always provides a worry is the rubbish.

As with every year, there will be no rubbish collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. As Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday, it means that across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset, there will be no collections on Wednesday, December 25, Thursday, December 26 or Wednesday, January 1.

As a result, across the region collection dates will be rescheduled from December 25 until Saturday, January 11. Most residents will see their rubbish collected on a different day as a result.

Garden waste services will not take place during this time due to minimal demand and reuse and recycle centres across the region will close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Here is when rubbish collections will take place over the festive period for Bristol. General waste collections (to be taken alongside recycling) are in bold and italics.

What about in South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset?

The collection dates across the other regions follow mostly the same as in Bristol, whilst in Bath and North East Somerset it is identical. For each of the three councils a postcode checker will tell you when your next collection is. The checkers can be found here:

Bristol Waste have provided some tips for recycling over the festive period, including:

  • Holiday cards can be recycled in the blue bag, although cards with glitter can not be recycled.

  • Cardboard will be recycled as long as tape and stickers are removed and the cardboard is flattened or folded.

  • Wrapping paper can not be recycled so will need to be placed in the black wheelie bin.

  • Place fairy lights in a clear bag in the black recycling box or take any that need disposing to a recycling centre.
