There’s only a week to go until one of the most anticipated days of 2024, and we don’t mean Christmas Day. The final episode of Gavin and Stacey is almost here, with fans waiting almost a year after co-writer and star, James Corden, announced the episode back in May this year.
So whilst we’re counting down the days until the episode hits our TV screens, here is everything we know so far.
When is it on and how long for?
The finale will be airing on BBC One on Christmas Day at 9pm. And it won’t be a regular 30 minute episode that we’re used to from the original series. Instead we’re being treated to a 90-minute special.
What happened in the last episode?
The last episode of Gavin and Stacey was also a Christmas special back in 2019, airing nine years after the original show ended in 2010. In the Christmas special the episode left audiences on a cliff-hanger after Nessa (Ruth Jones) proposed to Smithy (James Corden).
That episode brought in over 17 million viewers, making it the UK’s most-watched scripted TV programme of the 2010s.
What do we know about the final episode?
In May 2024, Corden announced the episode on his Instagram, with a photo of himself and Jones holding the script titled ‘Gavin and Stacey: the finale’. He wrote in the caption, “Some news … It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin And Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James.”
On the podcast Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware, Corden gave some more insight into the episode.
“It’s one of the best pieces of acting, what Ruth did with that character. The show picks up five years after we left off… Nessa has had this unbelievable chequered life and you find out more about that in this special – some really fun bits that we wrote.”
Corden also said of the finale, “It can’t carry on. When you’ll see it, you’ll know.”
Gavin and Stacey: The Finale airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Christmas Day at 9pm.
