A man arrested in connection with the murder of Kyran Durnin has been found dead in a home in Drogheda, Co Louth.
The suspect was arrested by gardai as part of the murder probe on Thursday but was released without charge on Friday evening.
However, the man, who is in his 30s, was found dead in a residence in Drogheda earlier today.
It is understood the man’s death is not being treated as suspicious.
A garda spokesman said an autopsy will now be carried out to determine the cause of death.
“Earlier today, Tuesday, 17th December 2024, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted following the discovery of a body of a male aged in his 30s in a domestic residence in Drogheda, County Louth.
“The local Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The outcome of the post-mortem will determine the course of the investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
Last week, a woman in her twenties known to Kyran was arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday and questioned before being released on Wednesday.
Following her release, a man was arrested on Thursday and two searches of different properties commenced in the Co Louth town for any evidence that could assist in the investigation.
Detectives suspected the man of covering up Kyran’s disappearance after social workers began asking questions about the missing boy.
The man was known to Kyran and the woman who was arrested.
Kyran was first reported missing by his grandmother at the end of August, but gardaí believe that he was killed or murdered two years earlier.
School records were quickly searched by gardaí but it was established that the last school Kyran attended was under the impression that he was to move to a different school as the school year ended, but there are no records of him having attended elsewhere.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris last week told reporters he believes Kyran died when he was six, and whatever happened to him may have occurred in May 2022, after the last confirmed sightings of him in school.
He said garda attempts to track Kyran after May 2022 were unsuccessful, and they can find no official trace of Kyran in the last six months of 2022 or in 2023, sources said.
Tusla has said it received no referrals of concern about Kyran’s welfare or attendance at school between 2022 and 2024. But by early 2024, Tusla began to take an interest in Kyran again having being involved in his earlier life.
