Ranvir Singh, the Good Morning Britain host, has always been open about her struggle with alopecia. Despite suffering from the condition for years, many fans might not even realise she has it.
At the tender age of eight, after her father tragically died from a heart attack, Ranvir first noticed hair loss. While mourning her dad, she observed more hair receding and now opts to wear a fringe to conceal it.
During the Lorraine show on Tuesday (December 17), Ranvir was joined by Tyler West, who is usually on hand to give television updates. This time, however, he appeared alongside Ranvir and Dr Hilary to talk about his successful hair transplant.
Tyler was thrilled with his new look as he detailed the procedure involving moving hair follicles from the back to the front of his head.
While Ranvir was impressed by Tyler’s results, she took a moment to convey an essential message to those affected by alopecia before concluding the segment, reports the Mirror.
The Political correspondent remarked: “We’ve got to go in a minute, but just to say, it’s not… you can’t… alopecia…” She paused and gestured towards Dr Hilary Jones, mentioning: “I’ve got alopecia, as you know, because we’ve talked about it.”
Dr Hilary acknowledged her with a supportive ‘Yes’, prompting Ranvir to share: “In fact I did go and talk about having a hair transplant but they said, ‘You haven’t got enough hair at the back to do it.'”.
Dr Hilary intervened to provide factual support during the discussion, with the renowned TV medic asserting: “There are different kinds of hair loss, so if it’s permanent hair loss due to genetics and male pattern baldness, which women can also suffer from, then this would work.”
“But it’s not going to work for alopecia areata,” he continued, clarifying that: “Which is when your hair falls out in clumps but will regrow spontaneously later, so it’s not for everybody.”
Previously on Lorraine, Ranvir had been forthright about her health struggle. In April 2022, she demonstrated to viewers her experience with the condition by parting her hair to reveal the effects.
The occasion was pertinent as it coincided with a segment discussing the reaction to Will Smith’s incident with Chris Rock at the Oscars, where Rock made a contentious joke about Smith’s spouse, Jada Pinkett-Smith, who has long dealt with alopecia.
Opening up about her personal challenges, the TV personality shared: “I’ve always had a fringe, I’ve found ways to cover it, I use coloured sprays and things. I’ve got a patch in the middle, I’ve got a patch at the back.”
Ranvir delved into the origins of her condition, revealing: “It started when my dad had a heart attack and when he died when I was eight or nine, and it’s never come back, so I understand a little bit of the real discomfort you live with having it.”
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
