The cause of a huge fire in Bristol this weekend has been determined. An estimated of seven tonnes of scrap metal and household appliances went up in flames near Bristol city centre yesterday afternoon, Saturday, December 14.

Plumes of thick black smoke was seen across Bristol during the fire at Sims Metal on New Gatton Road. Multiple people reported “smoke covering the M32” and an “acrid tyre fire smell over in Easton “.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 2.20pm. The crews first at the scene found a “well-developed” blaze.

Seven fire engines were called to the scene to extinguish the tonnes of burning material. Firefighters battled the fire for a number of hours, as locals and residents were warned to keep doors and windows closed due to the large amount of smoke.

Luckily, no one was injured during the fire. After an investigation by the fire service, the cause has been deemed as accidental.

In an update today, December 15, Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: “Update on the fire on New Gatton Road, Bristol: The fire was extinguished by approximately 6:30pm last night (14 December).

“The cause of the fire has been determined as accidental. Thank you to everyone’s patience while we extinguished the fire.”
