A man has been charged after two Co Down residents were hospitalised following a burglary.

One person was grabbed by the throat and the other hit with a hurling stick during the incident in Crossgar on Monday evening.

PSNI Detective Sergeant James Johnston said: “Shortly after 7pm we received a report that two men had entered a property in the Killyleagh Street area of the town while the residents were asleep.

“One man armed with a Hurley bat grabbed one of the residents by the throat before striking the other with the weapon causing injuries to their head.

“They were taken to hospital for treatment.

A 35-year-old man arrested in the Crossgar area shortly after the incident has now been charged with aggravated burglary and common assault.

He is due to appear before Newtownards Magistrates Court on Wednesday December 11.

As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
