The artist behind the Bristol Dinosaur has unveiled a huge mural at Cabot Circus to celebrate 20 years of the famous piece. Illustrator Andy Council’s latest new T-Rex inspired creation captures more than 30 Bristol landmarks – and a supermarket.

The Bristol Dinosaur first roamed the city in 2005, commissioned by Decode Magazine for the Western Union CD compilation. It made waves for its fusion of West Country landmarks into a Godzilla-like form.

A decade later, Andy released an updated version and 20 years on, the dinosaur has once again evolved to reflect a modern Bristol. He says each version of the work reflects Bristol’s “changing identity” – so the new 60 sq m illustration – which is across the former entrance to the closed Cinema de Lux – includes Clifton Suspension Bridge, Dean Lane skatepark and unexpected locations like Turbo Island and Asda in Bedminster.

Andy said: “The Bristol Dinosaur has always been a reflection of the city’s growth and transformation. With each iteration, the landmarks morph, disappear or evolve, mirroring Bristol’s changing identity.

“The newest version is really cool and it’s great to see it in such a prominent place like Cabot Circus.”

Steve Hayles, founder of Upfest, said: “As long-time supporters and fans of Andy and his dinosaur series, it’s just brilliant to see the 20th anniversary Bristol Dinosaur come to life. It perfectly sums up the spirit of Bristol and it’s an honour to play a role in celebrating such a beloved artistic milestone.”
