If you’re a recipient of benefits from the Department of Work and Pensions, there’s a chance that your payment dates may change during the festive period. This year, Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday and Boxing Day on a Thursday, both bank holidays, as is New Year’s Day on January 1.

This could result in some changes to when your benefits will be paid. HMRC has confirmed changes to Tax Credits.

If you receive tax credits, here are the revised dates for payments this month:

  • Payments due on Wednesday, December 25 will be paid on Tuesday, December 24
  • Payments due on Thursday, December 26 will be paid on Tuesday, December 24
  • Payments due on Friday, December 27 will be paid on Tuesday, December 24
  • Payments due on Wednesday, January 1 will be paid on Tuesday, December 31
  • Payments due on December 25, 26 and 27 will be paid on Tuesday, December 24. Payments due on January 1 will be issued on December 31.

If you receive tax credits, here are the revised dates for payments this month: The Department for Work and Pensions has yet to release its December payments schedule but it’s expected to follow a similar pattern to the one set by HMRC. This would mean that benefits usually received on the 25th, 26th or 27th of the month will instead appear in people’s accounts on December 24.

DWP benefits and payments that may be affected:

    • Universal Credit
    • State Pension
    • Pension Credit
    • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
    • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
    • Attendance Allowance
    • Carer’s Allowance
    • Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
    • Income Support
    • Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)

Payments expected on January 1 could arrive on New Year’s Eve.
