The Merseyside clash between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park has been called off due to Storm Darragh.

The fixture was scheduled to take place at 12.30pm on Saturday, but has been called off due to safety concerns.

Local authorities were the ones who made the final decision to postpone the match, not the two clubs.

An Everton statement read: “Today’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions.”

Storm Darragh has already wreaked havoc on football fixtures this weekend with several non-league matches called off.

Plymouth’s match against Oxford United was the first football league match to be postponed with the worst of the weather set to hit the west coast of England and Wales.

Cardiff and Newport County also had home matches against Watford and Carlisle United postponed.

A red ‘danger to life’ warning was issued by the Met Office heading into the weekend across parts of Wales, Bristol and north Somerset.

The FAW said in a statement: “The Met Office has issued red, amber, and yellow weather warnings for the vast majority of Wales due to Storm Darragh, which is expected to bring damaging winds and heavy rain, causing significant disruption and danger to life.

“It is not safe to drive in such weather, including travelling to and from football matches. Being outside in high winds increases the risk of injury and The Met Office advises people to stay indoors if possible.

“Clubs have been advised to check for and secure any loose items around their grounds if it can be done safely. This includes bins, furniture, goalposts, and fences etc.

“Potential postponements of fixtures on Friday 6 December and Sunday 8 December will be considered on a case-by-case basis, in line with each individual league’s policy.”

Everton’s win over Liverpool at Goodison Park in April was their first at home since 2010.

The match this weekend was Everton’s chance to win back-to-back Merseyside derby’s for the first time in 39 years.
