The Belfast Christmas Market will be closed on Saturday as it “will not be safe” due to the incoming weather.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for Northern Ireland on Saturday as Storm Darragh is expected to bring “potentially damaging winds” across.

Gusts of up to 70 to 80mph are expected around coastal areas while inland winds could reach 60 to 70mph.

The amber weather warning is in place from 1am to 9pm on Saturday.

A spokesperson for Belfast Christmas Market said that due to the expected “extreme weather, it will not be safe” to open on Saturday.

“We recognise this may be disappointing, however the safety of our visitors and traders is of the utmost importance,” said a spokesperson.

“At the moment the plan is to reopen on Sunday, December 8, however this is weather dependent. Please refer to the Belfast Christmas Market and Belfast City Council social media for updates.”

Heavy rain is expected to hit Northern Ireland between 3pm on Friday and 12pm on Saturday.

A further yellow weather warning is also in place from 3pm on Friday to 6am on Sunday for strong winds.
