New details are emerging about the alleged gunman who fatally shot United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson on Wednesday morning in New York.

Thompson was in New York City for an investor meeting when a man who was “lying in wait” approached him outside of the New York Hilton Midtown around 6:45 a.m., according to the New York Police Department.

The suspect fired several rounds in what appeared to be a “targeted attack,” New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference on Wednesday. Thompson was hit “at least once in the back” and “at least once in the right calf,” said Tisch. He was later pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

“The full investigative effort of the NYPD is underway, and we will not rest until we apprehend the shooter,” Tisch said in a post on X. She also appealed to the public for help, urging residents to contact the police department if they have any information about the case.

Police released images of the alleged gunman on X. In the photos, the suspect’s face is covered, he is wearing a black jacket with the hood up and a grey backpack. In another set of photos also shared on X, the suspect can be seen riding a bike.

After the shooting, police said the suspect fled on foot and then on an e-bike. He was “last seen in Central Park on Center Drive,” said Tisch.

Security camera video obtained by news outlet ABC 7 in New York shows a man who appears to be wearing the same clothing as the suspect around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday. In the video, he can be seen walking on the street, toward the Hilton hotel, holding a cellphone to his ear, the New York Post reported. In another video, directly in front of the hotel, the suspect can be seen pulling out what appears to be a gun and pointing it at Thompson, per the Post.

Sources told the publication they believed the gunman used a silencer, which suppresses the noise of a gun when it is fired, and seemed to be an experienced shooter.
