A warning has been issued about the use of ‘dodgy’ firesticks after a nationwide crackdown. The ‘dodgy boxes’ can be downloaded onto your TV, allowing you to stream live content and entertainment from platforms such as Disney+, Netflix, Amazon and many more without paying the individual platform fees.
FACT, the UK’s leading organisation for intellectual property protection, has cautioned that those using illegal streaming devices could face serious consequences. The organisation is, in collaboration with police services, ramping up efforts to stop suppliers from selling unauthorised access to premium content, including films, television and live sports.
During a two-week enforcement operation, FACT and the police targeted 30 suppliers of illegal IPTV services. These individuals were personally visited and sent cease-and-desist warnings by post, instructing them to immediately stop their illegal activities or risk potential criminal prosecution.
The clampdown happened in various locations in the UK, including Merseyside. Courts are imposing harsh penalties for illegal streaming operations, especially for those who choose to ignore warnings. Last month, a private prosecution by the Premier League resulted in a 29-year-old man from Liverpool, being handed a three-year and four-month prison sentence for selling and using illicit Firesticks, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Kieron Sharp, CEO of FACT, said: “Our cease-and-desist measures are not just warnings-they are the first step toward holding offenders accountable. Many who ignored these notices in the past are now facing arrest and criminal charges. We strongly advise anyone involved in these activities to stop immediately.”
He added: “If you’re supplying or using illicit streaming devices or illegal IPTV subscriptions, take this as a clear warning: you are breaking the law and risk facing serious consequences.” Sharp asserted that the police’s dedication is essential, explaining: “We will continue working with police to track down and shut down these illegal operations. The police across the UK have been unstinting in their efforts to tackle this criminality and we are grateful for their assistance.”
He concluded by saying: “Illegal streaming exposes your home to criminals, granting them access to data stored on your network, including banking details and sensitive personal information. Additionally, it can introduce malware, which can further compromise your security”.
