This puppy left in a North York park story is heartbreaking, but thankfully it has a happy ending.

Clementine, an eight-week-old, fawn-coloured French Bulldog puppy, was discovered abandoned in a chips box in a park near Jane St. and Lawrence Ave. W. and bleeding from her rectum before a kind stranger took her to the Toronto Humane Society on Oct. 15.
The puppy was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition known as rectal prolapse, where rectal tissue protrudes through the anus. And without prompt medical intervention it could have led to severe complications.
Clementine underwent surgery the following day and initially the pain medication made her nauseous, and she experienced recurrent bleeding, but she is now recovered and is living with her new family.
The Toronto Humane Society’s “Keep Pets in the Picture” campaign emphasizes the importance of providing support before pets face abandonment by pet owners who are unable to afford urgent veterinary care due to the rising cost of living.
“Stories like Clementine’s are both heartbreaking and inspiring,” Melissa Shupak, director of Animal Sheltering at Toronto Humane Society, said in a statement.
“It’s devastating to think about the situations that lead to pets being abandoned, but it’s also a testament to the incredible difference our community can make. With the support of our donors, we’re able to provide life-saving care to animals who need it most.”

“We understand the harsh reality many pet guardians face when the cost of medical care becomes insurmountable,” Shupak said. “Our mission is to ensure that no one has to make the impossible choice between their financial stability and their pet’s well-being.”
