General Motors is recalling more than 18,000 new heavy-duty pickups in Canada as part of an expansion to a prior safety campaign it’d launched early this year. The defect in these trucks could see the power-locking tailgate unlatch itself while parked, and perhaps later fall open.

In Canada, some 18,010 examples of 2024-model-year Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD trucks are covered by the new recall, but only if equipped with the power-locking tailgate; in the U.S., it’s another 132,037. What’s happening with these pickups is that “water could leak into the exterior tailgate switch,” says Transport Canada. Once that happens, the switch could start doing whatever it wants, including unlocking, while parked. If that happens, the unlatched tailgate could of course fall open to let cargo fly out the back.
GM is telling owners to ensure the tailgate is fully closed and latched before driving; but it has a fix for the problem, too, a new switch assembly better at keeping water out. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified and asked to bring their truck into the dealer for the free repair.
The Transport Canada code for this recall is 2024-720; and the internal General Motors designation is N242469160. The prior recall was launched in February of 2024, and covered some 249,132 examples of the same pickups dating back to the 2020 model year; as well as light-duty Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 trucks from 2020 to 2023.
