Derry City are weighing up a move for Northern Ireland’s Shane Ferguson.

The 33-year-old, who has won 57 caps, is a free agent having left Rotherham in the summer and is keen for a return to action as soon as possible.

Sources in Londonderry have told the Belfast Telegraph that former Newcastle and Rangers ace Ferguson, who can play at left back or on the left side of midfield, is very much on the radar of the Candystripes.

New Derry boss Tiernan Lynch is keen to bring quality to the Brandywell ahead of the 2025 League of Ireland campaign and Ferguson would be in that category, and provide great experience as well.

Ferguson is not the only international in Derry’s thoughts. Lynch has already gone public on his desire to sign Northern Ireland winger Gavin Whyte, who has interest from across the island.

During Michael O’Neill’s first spell in charge of Northern Ireland, Ferguson was a regular in the squad and played in the Euro 2016 finals.

Originally from Eglinton, Ferguson made his name with Newcastle, making his first team debut in 2010. He would go on to have loan spells with Birmingham, Rangers and Millwall before joining the Lions in 2016.

He was a popular figure at Millwall, leaving five years later for Rotherham which is where he was until the end of last season when he was released following the club’s relegation to League One.
