A recent study of 2,000 adults has revealed that the average person spends eight hours a week glued to the TV.

But before settling in for the evening two fifths of viewers make sure everything is set up ‘just right’ so they won’t have to move until their show or film is over.

According to the survey the prime time to cosy up on the couch is 8:08pm with loungewear the attire of choice. And for a small 20 per cent they prefer to do this on their own without any company.

When it comes to the furniture set up, the ideal distance between the screen and sofa is four metres and most prefer to sit upright without a footrest.

For most Brits the recipe for creating the perfect ambiance is having the temperature at a warm 19 degrees and making sure all the doors and curtains are fully closed. And to make it feel more like a cinema 46 per cent like to keep the lightening low.

A spokesperson from DFS, who commissioned the survey to mark the launch of its new Cinesound range of cinema sofas, said: “We all have our own ways of watching TV, with personal likes and dislikes when it comes to creating that perfect environment.

“It’s all subjective, so what works for one person might not suit someone else, but ensuring you have the right set up is important for all TV and movie lovers.”

With the ability to create the perfect viewing environment, over half now say they’d rather watch movies at home than at the cinema. They appreciate being able to pause the movie if needed, having a guaranteed comfortable seat, and ultimately sat it’s a more budget-friendly option.

Additionally, they don’t have to deal with distractions like people chatting during the film or someone’s phone obstructing their view.

To improve their overall home entertainment experience, 26 per cent like the idea of reclining seats while 23 per cent wouldn’t mind an in-built charger for their phone.

The DFS spokesperson noted: “There has been a huge shift in people’s viewing preferences with the pandemic playing a massive role in that.

“Although there is something special about watching a film at the cinema, there are also many benefits about watching one in the comfort of your own home. And the environment that you watch it in plays an important part in that too.”
