People on DWP benefits could be missing out on vital additional support that could increase their income by some £2,400 a year. The Government has shared details about the help available for unpaid carers, with some able to receive an “additional amount” annually that can add thousands to their income.

Work and Pensions minister, Sir Stephen Timms, highlighted how financial aid from the Government is accessible for caregivers, noting that Carer’s Allowance as well as income-related benefits such as Universal Credit and Pension Credit may be provided at an increased rate for those with caring duties. He said: “In addition to Carer’s Allowance, carers on low incomes can claim income-related benefits, such as Universal Credit and Pension Credit.

“These benefits can be paid to carers at a higher rate than those without caring responsibilities through the carer element and the additional amount for carers respectively.” Regarding the potential extra funds carers could get, Sir Stephen indicated: “These additional amounts are worth around £2,400 a year.”

Presently, under the rules for Universal Credit, individuals helping someone eligible for certain health or disability benefits may receive an extra £198.31 per month, accumulating to £2,379.72 over a year. This additional sum is applicable if you provide care for people who are on benefits such as Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Attendance Allowance, among others.

Pension Credit claimants may be entitled to an extra £45.60 weekly if they provide care for another adult and meet specific criteria, such as receiving Carer’s Allowance or Carer Support Payment, potentially boosting their annual income by £2,371.20. Mr Timms shed light on the benefits of Carer’s Allowance, saying: “Unpaid carers may be able to receive financial and/or employment support from the department depending on their circumstances.

“Carer’s Allowance provides a measure of financial support and recognition for people who are not able to work full time due to their caring responsibilities. The rate of Carer’s Allowance is £81.90 a week in 2024/25, and from April 2025 this will increase by 1.7 percent to £83.30 a week, net of allowable expenses.”

Now is the prime time for Pension Credit applications, as those filed before December 21 could still be eligible for this year’s Winter Fuel Payment, which is worth £200 or £300. This is because you can backdate a claim by up to three months, meaning you can still meet the qualifying week for the payment, in September.
