Neighbours soap legend Ian Smith has told how he has been told he is expected “to die” after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. The star, who has played Harold Bishop on the Australian show since 1987, says he has been told the disease is “non-fixable”.
He broke the news on Australian TV saying he had been living with the news for a few months. He told Ten News on Monday: “I found out a few months back that I have cancer.”
He added is was a “very aggressive non-fixable cancer,” reports The Sun. He went on: “And they expect me to … they expect me to die.”
The star became a popular member of the cast of the long-running soap in 1987 when he took on the role of Harold Bishop. He left in 1991 but returned five years later. He has another stint away from the show in 2009, returning in 2011 and 2015.
He then made his return permanent in 2022. It is not known how long he will remain in the show but it has been reported he will continue on screen until next year.
Jason Herbison, the Executive Producer of the soap, said it was a “very emotional moment on set as we paid tribute to him and the incredible contribution he has made to the show.” The producer said both the star and his character are “loved” by both the show and the public.
In a separate statement a Network 10 spokesperson said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened to hear of Ian Smith’s cancer diagnosis. A cherished member of the Neighbours family, Ian has been the heart and soul of the show since he first arrived on Ramsay Street in 1987.
“Ian has brought joy, laughter and inspiration to audiences all around the world for decades. “Along with the cast and crew and all his fans from around the world, we will support Ian in any way we can during this difficult time.”
