A carriageway on the M48 Severn Bridge will close for the next four nights this week for bridge maintenance works. Starting tonight (Monday, December 2), and lasting until Friday morning, the overnight closures will see one side of the M48 bridge, a vital route near Bristol, closed at a time.
Sections of the Severn Bridge will close as maintenance on the bridge structure is undertaken, as a result some traffic will be able to access the bridge heading in one direction only. The works, which are in two phases, are being managed by National Highways.
Starting tonight, the M48 heading eastbound between junction two and junction one (from Chepstow to Aust) will be closed over two nights, reopening at 6am the following morning. The M48 on the westbound side will not be affected during the Monday and Tuesday night closure (reopening Wednesday morning).
The second phase begins on Wednesday and Thursday night where the M48 will be closed westbound between junction one and two for further maintenance. The westbound carriageway will close from 8pm to 6am both nights.
During the second set of closures affecting the westbound carriageway, there will be a lane closure affecting the eastbound carriageway. The lane closure will also be in effect from 8pm to 6am both nights, however traffic will still be able to access the carriageway during this time.
A diversion will be in place during the night closures. Vehicles will be signposted to use the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge.
