Snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan has named Kyren Wilson as the best player in the world, following his own early exit from the UK Championship last week.

The seven-time world champion made the bold claim days after crashing out of the tournament on the opening day, having lost 6-4 to Barry Hawkins.

Despite his own disappointment, O’Sullivan has kept a close eye on the competition while working in commentary and believes Wilson could be a strong contender for the trophy in York.

Speaking to Eurosport, O’Sullivan praised Wilson’s methodical approach to the game.

“It’s consistency levels basically, he does what looks simple but its not simple, but he does it very efficiently,” O’Sullivan said.

“That’s why I think he’s the best player in the world.”

The Rocket expressed confidence in Wilson’s abilities, particularly in crucial stages of tournaments.

“If he gets to the semis my money is on him all day because great temperament, great game,” he added.

O’Sullivan highlighted Wilson’s challenging journey to the top of the sport, too, as well as his current success and stability.

“He’s had it hard. Worked behind the bar when he fell off the tour. He’s a warrior,” the Rocket continued.

“Now he’s world champion, got a great life, great family, he ain’t letting this go.

O’Sullivan is such a big fan he even texted Wilson to let him know his verdict.

“This is your time, go and get as many majors as you can because there’ll be a time when it don’t happen for you,” the snooker star said when asked what he told his fellow professional.

Despite reaching the quarter-finals, Wilson has admitted to struggling with anxiety during the UK Championship.

“I’ll be honest I don’t feel myself this week, I don’t know why. I’ve felt really anxious this week,” Wilson revealed.

Wilson is set to face either Jak Jones or Michael Holt in the quarter-finals of the UK Championship.

O’Sullivan remains confident in Wilson’s potential, emphasising the importance of seizing the moment.

“He’s got to make the most of it now because he’s got the game in his hands, really,” O’Sullivan said.

The endorsement from the seven-time world champion comes at a crucial time as Wilson aims to capitalise on his current form in York.
