A major travel guide publisher has broken ranks with its rivals by offering a “no go” list.
Rather than offer up a top-10 of hot spots, Fodor’s has included in its listings for 2025 a total of 15 “destinations to reconsider” for the coming year.
The U.S.-based travel guide said some vacation honey pots are suffering from “untenable popularity” and are best avoided.
“Some of these highly coveted tourist spots are collapsing under the burden of their own prominence,” it said.
Its “Perennial No List” encompasses some of Europe’s most attractive sights, including the Canary Islands, Barcelona, Venice, Lisbon and Mallorca.
Fodor’s said many locals in these destinations “don’t want you” because of the effects mass tourism is having on the environment, congestion and the cost of living, especially housing.
Other places to avoid are Mount Everest, Bali in Indonesia and Thailand’s Koh Samui, which has soared in popularity after it was used as a filming location in the third season of the HBO satire series White Lotus.
Among the other destinations losing their allure are Scotland’s North Coast 500 scenic drive; Oaxaca, Mexico; Kerala, India; Agrigento, Sicily; the British Virgin Islands; and Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan.
“The No List serves to highlight destinations where tourism is placing unsustainable pressures on the land and local communities,” Fodor’s stated.
“Fodor’s does not advocate for travel boycotts — they harm local economies and fail to bring about meaningful change. But we do believe that the first step to alleviating a problem is recognizing there is one.”
