A new wine bar has opened on newly created street in St Paul’s. Carmen Street Wine is the latest venture from the team behind Caper and Cure, a popular restaurant in Stokes Croft, which was recently named among the Good Food Guide’s 100 Best Local Restaurants for 2024.
The new wine bar has opened on the brand new Carmen Beckford Street – in the new Carriage Works development. The street sits just off Ashley Road in St Paul’s and is named after Carmen Beckford, midwife, the first race relations officer in Bristol, one of the founders of St Paul’s Carnival, and the first Black recipient of an MBE in the South West.
Offering up not only wine, but also events and private dining, the new bar posted a thank you message on its Instagram to all those who attended its opening evening on Sunday (November 17). The post read: “Huge thanks to everyone that made it to our opening evening on Sunday!
“And huge thanks to everyone involved in making Carmen Street come to life! Very grateful to all of you for coming, Lea for her wonderful wine, Bristol Distilling for the gin, Wiper & True for the beer, Ireland for the Guinness and our kitchen and front of house teams doing an amazing job as always. Carmen Street Wine will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays each week starting from tomorrow at 5!”
Taking to the comments section, fans were quick to share their excitement at the news. One said: “Launch party at Carmen Street was ‘well capered’. Well done!”
A second wrote: “Congratulations! And thank you for bringing Bristol a new wine-focused venue. Exciting times!”
While described as “only small”, the team at Carmen Street Wine promise a ‘big wine list’ which customers can take away, drink in, or enjoy under the awnings with a few plates from the venue’s ‘concise’ menu. The venue doesn’t take reservations unless for private hire, so people can walk in – but it’s advised you check the wine bar’s Instagram feed to ensure a private event isn’t taking place on your chosen day.
