A man has seemingly ‘come back from the dead’ just moments before he was due to be cremated.

The man named only as Rohitash, 45, is deaf and mute and was discovered breathing as he was being prepared for his funeral in Jhunjhunu City, Rajasthan, India, on Thursday.

Footage captured the dramatic moment as the man, wrapped in a blanket, lay surrounded by shocked onlookers when he appeared to resurrect himself.

The incident has led to the suspension of three doctors for negligence after they failed to conduct proper post-mortem examinations.

Rohitash had spent three hours in a freezing morgue before staff discovered he was still breathing.

The man had initially fallen critically ill while staying at a local shelter, leading to his admission to hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Officials later explained to local media that medical staff had failed to conduct the required post-mortem examination to determine his cause of death.

Jhunjhunu Police Superintendent, Sharad Chouodhary said: “The man did not have any relatives present when he initially arrived at the hospital.

“His condition worsened and there were no signs of life.

“The doctors were supposed to do a post-mortem examination, but they did not do anything.

“They just fulfilled the paper formalities and sent the man for cremation.”

The superintendent added that “when the body was placed on the pyre, he woke up.”

Following the discovery that the 45-year-old was alive, he was immediately rushed back to the Rajkiya Bhagwan Das (BDK) Hospital for urgent treatment.

The principal medical officer and three doctors involved in the case have been suspended over alleged negligence.

Tragically, Rohitash died on the following day whilst receiving emergency treatment in the intensive care unit.
