The Calgary Police Service issued a warning announcing the release of a sex offender officers believe is at high risk to reoffend.
A news release said John Macindoe, 39, was released into the community on Tuesday after serving two thirds of a six-year and seven-month sentence.
He was serving time for break and enter to commit a sexual assault, break and enter with intent to commit a sexual assault, break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of break and enter tools.
Macindoe committed the crimes between 2014 and 2019 in Calgary, having known his victims.
In one incident, Macindoe admitted to breaking into a woman’s apartment on April 1, 2019, with the intent of raping her.
He found his victim sleeping on her couch, and while he stalked around the apartment she used her smartwatch to contact her boyfriend, who summoned police.
Found with Macindoe was a “rape kit,” which included zip ties, a large buck knife and bondage straps for her hands and feet.
Surveillance video from the woman’s apartment complex showed Macindoe had broken into the building on nine previous occasions in the preceding month, and a search of his home uncovered two pairs of her panties and a clump of hair that matched the length and colour of the victim‘s.
DNA retrieved because of that incident tied Macindoe to a 2014 Calgary sexual assault.
In June 2014, the victim awoke around 4:05 a.m. to find a man standing over top of her inside her bedroom.
The victim screamed and the man covered her mouth with one hand and groped her breast over her shirt with his other. The man pulled the duvet cover down, straddling the victim in bed. The victim was able to kick him in his torso, knocking him backwards. She ran to another room and contacted police.
Police seized a bottle of lubricant found on the victim’s bedroom floor and processed it for DNA. In 2020, the DNA was matched to Macindoe.
“The Calgary Police Service is issuing this warning after careful deliberation and consideration of related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief it is clearly in the public interest to inform members of the community of the release of Macindoe,” wrote CPS in the news release.
Macindoe is described as 5’10” tall, with brown eyes and brown hair.
He will be bound by statutory release conditions and monitored by the Correctional Service of Canada followed by a period of probation. He will also be monitored by the CPS High-Risk Offender Program.
CPS is asking members of the public not to engage in any form of vigilante activity.
