England hero Joe Marler has announced he is bringing forward his planned retirement with his final match being against the Bristol Bears on Friday.
The 34-year-old Harlequins stalwart will face Bristol in what will be an emotional farewell to the sport.
The decision comes as a surprise, with Marler having previously indicated he would continue club rugby until the end of the season.
“The time has come to finally jump off the rollercoaster and walk away from this beautifully brutal game. On Friday night I’ll play my last-ever match for Quins. After all these happy years, it’s over,” Marler said in a statement.
“I feel lucky to have pulled on the jersey worn by so many idols of mine, and so many better players.
“That’s an incredible thing to me. I got to stand alongside so many great players and people that have made this club so special.”

This latest announcement follows Marler’s retirement from international rugby just three and a half weeks ago.
The prop ended his 95-cap England career on November 3rd, shortly after leaving the national team’s camp ahead of the Autumn Nations Series due to personal reasons.
He sits 10th on the all-time list for most England appearances, just ahead of Jonny Wilkinson.
Marler’s departure marks the end of a remarkable 14-year career with Harlequins, where he has made 285 appearances since 2009.
During his time at The Stoop, he has secured two Gallagher Premiership winners medals, cementing his legacy at the club.
His loyalty to Harlequins has been particularly noteworthy, having spent his entire professional career with the London club.

The prop forward has been one of rugby’s most recognisable figures, though his career has not been without controversy, including several bans.
In an emotional farewell message, Marler expressed deep gratitude to Harlequins supporters, saying: “Thank you for your patience and support, when you could easily have turned your back on me.”
“For the kindness you’ve shown – even when I haven’t deserved it – and for cheering my name, even after I’d been banned again.”
Harlequins head coach Danny Wilson paid tribute to the departing prop, highlighting his unique character both on and off the pitch.
“Joe’s a remarkable character on and off the pitch and hugely popular with our supporters,” Wilson said.
He emphasised the rarity of Marler’s loyalty to one club throughout his career: “In the modern game, it’s rare that players stay at one club for the duration of their professional career and that can’t be overlooked.”
Wilson added that Marler “should rightly be recognised for his outstanding achievements for both club and country.”
