Asda has reintroduced a £1 deal for shoppers as the winter season progresses and Christmas approaches. The supermarket giant, competing with the likes of Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Morrisons, Aldi, Tesco, and others, has revived its popular soup, roll, and unlimited tea and coffee offer for just £1, available until the end of February.
Customers can choose from three soup flavours: Tomato, Chicken, or Vegetable, with 60,000 meals already sold in the first fortnight since the deal’s relaunch. The initiative aims to promote social interaction, especially considering that one in 10 over-60s have reported visiting a supermarket just to have a conversation with someone else.
Sean McEvans, Asda’s Commercial Vice President Fresh and Frozen, commented on the importance of the initiative: “We know winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and on a fixed income.”
“We’ve already served 60,000 meals to the over 60’s in the first two weeks, and since its launch 1.2 million meals have been sold showing the vital need for this initiative. By bringing Winter Warmers back for 2024 and extending it until February we hope it will prove just as impactful across the winter months for those who need it most.”
This comes as Asda’s new Christmas Community Report highlights the lack of interaction many older people experience during the festive period. The report reveals that one in 10 people over the age of 60 had visited a supermarket simply for human interaction, reports Birmingham Live.
During the previous Christmas, 17 per cent of people reported days when they didn’t speak to a single person. From mid-December to the end of the year, 15 per cent admitted they became accustomed to not interacting with others.
In response, the retailer launched the Winter Warmers initiative in November 2022 for two months, aiming to assist older customers most affected by escalating living costs.
