Ontario drivers were at the bottom of the pile in terms of provincial rankings for the most at-risk accidents, according to a new study by Ontario’s Preszler Injury Lawyers.
The firm analyzed 2022 data from Transport Canada on reports of road-traffic injuries and the estimated number of licensed drivers in each province.
It then compared the number of injuries to the number of licensed drivers to calculate a rate per 100,000 people and determined the ranking.
Ontario saw 319.4 injuries per 100,000 licenced drivers, almost half the rate of the provincial leader in rankings, Manitoba, due to an estimated total of 35,688 injuries.
Manitoba drivers are the most at-risk for accidents in Canada with 786.4 injuries per 100,000 licensed drivers in 2022.
Saskatchewan followed in second with 681.3 injuries per 100,000 licensed drivers and Nova Scotia was third with 5,053 estimated total injuries among 781,904 drivers and an injury rate of 636.9 per 100,000 drivers.
“The data shows that drivers in provinces like Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia must remain extra vigilant,” said a spokesperson for the Preszler Injury Lawyers.
“The local Canadian governments and drivers have a role to play in reducing the risk of road traffic injuries. The governments must focus on improving road surface conditions, ensuring clear signage, and implementing better traffic management systems. To stay safe on these roads, drivers should remember to closely follow road traffic laws and take preventative steps to ensure the safety of themselves and others.”
