As the UK braces for colder temperatures, many homes will find their heating systems working overtime. However, if you’re noticing that your rooms remain chilly despite the heating being cranked up, it could be a sign of an underlying issue.
Zhelyazko Yanchev, a plumber from Fantastic Services, explained: “Water heating systems circulate hot water through pipes and radiators throughout your home. There are plenty of ways to make radiators hotter and heat up faster, without buying a new boiler and using expensive or specialist tools.”
Yanchev reassures homeowners, stating: “Hot water radiator systems are very simple and the problems are likely as simple, too.” Here are some tips from the expert to ensure your radiators are functioning efficiently:
1. Clear up
The first step is to declutter around your radiators, reports the Express. Yanchev advises that since radiators rely on the principle of natural convection where hot air rises, any objects placed on or under them can disrupt this process.
“Any objects placed on or under them will almost certainly interfere with this process, so be sure to keep your radiators clutter-free,” he said.
2. Dust
Accumulated dust and lint can clog the vanes of a radiator, which are vertical tubes that carry cooling water, thus hampering heating efficiency. These can be easily cleaned with a long, thin duster.
3. Balance radiators
“If one room is always colder or its radiators take a long time to heat up, you may need to balance the radiators,” said Yanchev. Balancing ensures even heating regardless of the distance from the boiler.
4. Radiator fans
Radiator fans are compact electric devices that can be positioned either at the top or bottom of a radiator. The plumber explained: “By drawing air through the radiator’s vanes, they help it emit as much heat as possible.”
If you continue to have problems with your radiators and heating even after following these expert tips, it might be necessary to call in a professional.
Yanchev further stated: “If your radiators are not keeping your house warm in the winter, there may be several causes for this.”
