More than a dozen people are missing after a tourist vessel sank in the Red Sea, officials in Egypt have said. Egyptian authorities say 28 people have been rescued and 17 more are missing.

The Sea Story sent a distress signal at 5.30am local time – 3.30am GMT. The ship left Marsa Alam on Saturday for a five-day diving trip with 31 tourists and 14 crew.

Survivors were found in the Wadi el-Gemal area, south of Marsa Alam, and have been taken to hospital. The Egyptian Navy warship El Fateh and military aircraft are searching the area for survivors.

Marsa Alam iis an area popular with tourists and divers thanks to its coral reefs. The Sea Story is a new ship with 18 cabins, big enough for 36 passengers.
