Peel Regional Police said they responded to the collision just after midnight on Sunday in the Finch Ave.-Steeles Ave. E. area, south of Hwy. 407, which closed traffic in both directions for most of the day.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene and five other people were injured, including a female taken to a hospital in critical condition. The four others had minor injuries, Const. Moulika Sharma said in an email to TheToronto Sun.
Roadways in the area didn’t fully reopen until Sunday afternoon.
Sharma said two vehicles — an Audi heading eastbound and a Toyota Sienna minivan heading westbound — were travelling on Steeles before they were involved in a “violent collision” as the driver of the Sienna turned left onto Finch.
A male passenger in the minivan was pronounced dead at the scene, while the female driver was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Four people in the Audi had minor injuries, Sharma said.
Police were investigating the incident, Sharma said, adding they were aware of reports of street racing in the area and were probing whether there were any links to the fatal crash.
“It is too early in the investigation to rule anything out,” said Sharma, who told CP24 earlier in the day that stunt driving is a “major issue” in the region. “Our major collision bureau has taken the carriage of this incident.”
Police urged anyone with information to contact them at 905-435-2121, Ext. 3710.
