Judy Murray was left amused by a joke from Novak Djokovic after the Serb revealed Andy Murray would be his coach for the 2025 Australian Open.

Murray retired from tennis earlier in the year, having played doubles with Dan Evans at the Paris Olympics.

But he doesn’t seem content to just sit around and enjoy his time away from the sport, with the former world No 1 set to coach Djokovic at the Australian Open.

The Serb will be hoping to win the Grand Slam, having failed to win a single major this year.

Djokovic confirmed his decision on Saturday, saying in an Instagram video: “We played each other since we were boys. 25 years of being rivals. Of pushing each other beyond our limits.

“We had some of the most epic battles in our sports. They called us game changers, risk takers, and history makers.

“I thought our story maybe over, turns out it has one final chapter.

“It’s time for one of my toughest opponents to step into my corner. Welcome on-board coach Andy Murray.”

Judy initially reacted to the development on X with a popcorn emoji.

And she then replied with a laughing and clapping emoji when Djokovic joked that Murray ‘never liked retirement anyway.’

It is certainly a seismic appointment, one that many didn’t see coming.

And fans on X have been left thrilled, with many hoping the alliance leads to Djokovic winning a record 25th Grand Slam title.

A third said: “Wow, you will make a great partnership. 2 of the most determined players ever with that never give up attitude and chase every ball no matter what. Good luck together.”

And a fifth expressed their delight by saying: “Amazing!! Great to see this duo, giving another shot at young generation.”

Meanwhile, another player to recently retire was Rafael Nadal.

The 38-year-old played his last match at the Davis Cup but Sue Barker, speaking on talkSPORT, can’t see Djokovic following his old rival off into the sunset just yet.

“I think it’s records,” she said when asked why Djokovic hasn’t retired yet.

“It was a little bit like Serena Williams wanted to beat Margaret Court’s 24 Grand Slam titles. That’s Djokovic’s aim, I think.

“But also, when we talk physically, he seems to physically be as strong now as when he started out at 18 years old.

“I don’t know how he does it. He’s like an elastic band. He gets himself in positions that no one else seems to do.

“But it’s much tougher now. There’s a lot of tougher players that have come on now, people like Jannik Sinner, who believe they can win these slams.

“And so it’s a different sort of mindset for him. And all three big rivals have gone.

“But he says he’s ready for next year. And when Djokovic says he’s ready, then beware.”
