The M48 Severn Bridge is closed in both directions as a result of strong winds from Storm Bert this morning (Saturday, November 23). Adverse weather conditions have affected the region as power cuts were reported from 7am this morning in parts of the region and transport ground to a halt.
Just after 8.40am, the Severn Bridges X account (formerly Twitter) announced that the M48 was closed between junction one (for Aust) and junction two (for Chepstow). This followed restrictions which were placed on the bridge earlier this morning, according to Inrix.
National Highways said: “Road users are advised to use the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge as an alternate route. Our South West Regional Operations Centre is monitoring the wind speeds and will reopen the bridge as soon as the wind speeds reduce to a safe level.
“If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge has remained open, which National Highways said was because the newer bridge has barriers which reduce the effect of strong gusts. The older design of the M48 does not include these barriers and as such, the road needed to be closed for safety.
National Highways added: “We use dedicated forecasts and monitoring equipment on the bridge, which are more useful than forecasts found in the media and wind speeds measured in neighbouring communities. When we expect gusts above 40 knots (46mph), we close the Severn Bridge to all traffic until the wind speeds have dropped.
“If wind speeds exceed 70 knots (80mph), both bridges are closed. Traffic can still travel between England and Wales by following a diversion using the M5, M50, A40 and A449.”
The Met Office said: “Storm Bert bringing a widely unsettled and potentially disruptive day with heavy, persistent rain and gales, severe along coasts. Turning noticeably milder, resulting in a rapid melt of lying snow. Maximum temperature 16 °C.”
