A young family in Newtownabbey has been “left distraught” after their house was the target of a deliberate arson attack on Friday.
Flammable liquid was poured through the letterbox of the house in Dermot Way and set alight just after midnight.
No-one was inside the property at the time of the attack, as the family had not yet moved in.
Damage was caused to the front door, hallway and kitchen areas of the house.
The police have said they believe this was a case of mistaken identity and are appealing for information.
A spokesperson for the PSNI said: “We are investigating an arson attack on a house in Dermot Way, Newtownabbey.
“Flammable liquid was poured through the letterbox and set alight just after midnight this morning, Friday 22 November causing damage to the front door, hallway and kitchen areas.
“Thankfully no one was inside the property at the time however the young family who only took possession to the keys to the house yesterday in preparation for moving in, have been left distraught.
“We believe this deliberate act may have been a case of mistaken identity and we would like to hear from anyone with information that could help our investigation.
