Hot on the heels of a rather confusing and bewildering brand relaunch late November, one which incorporated stoic fashion models in bizarre clothing instead of actual vehicles, Jaguar has done what it should have in the first place and released a teaser shot of an upcoming concept car.
At least, we think it’s of an upcoming concept car. After the fever dream earlier this week, who’s to tell?
The photo, posted to social media accounts November 20, appears to show the rear haunches of a vehicle, perhaps one which will be part of a broader brand launch next month in Florida. It shows a coupe-like car with sharp lines and no rear window — a detail on which we would spend time pontificating, if not for the fact the crew at Polestar have already dragged that surprising design decision into the mainstream.
Is this teal-coloured angular moonshot actually a coupe? Is it a “coupe-ified” SUV? Is it the long-touted EV sedan we’ve heard so much about the past few months? As gearheads and fans of brash designs, we sincerely hope it is the first thing. Relaunching the brand with a polygon-esque take on the Vantage V12 would be a tremendous start, though it is all but certain a future (all-electric) Jag brand will have crossovers and SUVs in its lineup. The market demands it be so.
Students of marketing have had decades to digest the original Infiniti rocks ‘n’ trees campaign, a series of traditional media ads in the early 1990s used to introduce the fledgling brand to North Americans. Most customers seem to have found it way too abstract and cryptic to have any sort of traction, especially compared to the equally new – and direct competitor – Lexus, which mostly just showed its cars in all their glory, or pulling off tricks like idling whilst balancing a pyramid of martini glasses on the engine. Guess which brand went on to massive success while the other continues to play catch-up today?
Will the same happen to a rebooted Jaguar? Time will tell. A fuller reveal of product is slated for December 2 in Miami.
