A man has been arrested in relation to the Creeslough explosion tragedy in Co Donegal in 2022 in which ten people died.

The man, in his 60s, was arrested by investigating gardai this morning.

Gardai said the man is currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in the Garda North Western Region.

“The investigation into the fatal explosion at a building complex in Creeslough, Co Donegal is ongoing, (and is) co-ordinated from Milford Garda Station where an Incident Room is established under the direction of a Garda Senior Investigating Officer,” a garda spokesperson said.

“The investigation continues to be led by local gardaí in Donegal Division, supported by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI) and other agencies including the Health & Safety Authority (HSA) and the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU).”

Ten people in total, including four men, three women and three children, ranging in age from five to 59, died in the blast that ripped through the Co Donegal village’s Applegreen service station and a nearby apartment block on Friday October 7, 2022.

They were Robert Garwe and his five-year-old daughter Shauna Flanagan Garwe, Catherine O’Donnell and her 13-year-old son James Monaghan, Jessica Gallagher, Martin McGill, James O’Flaherty, Martina Martin, Hugh Kelly and 14-year-old Leona Harper.

Last month, several families of those who died met Ireland’s Justice Minister to press their case for a public inquiry.

While gardaí continue to investigate the circumstances of the explosion, families of those who died have called for an inquiry into non-criminal factors of the blast.

The families met Helen McEntee at Government Buildings in Dublin as well as ministers Charlie McConalogue and Eamon Ryan.

Speaking after the meeting, which lasted an hour and a half, the families said the engagement was “very successful”.
